My files disappeared after OneDrive sync

Ця стаття поки що доступна лише англійською мовою.

If files disappear after OneDrive starts syncing, do not assume they have been permanently deleted.

OneDrive synchronizes changes between the PC and the cloud. A file can disappear from File Explorer because it was deleted, because a folder stopped syncing to this PC, because you are viewing a different OneDrive account, or because the file is cloud-only. [R1][R2]

The safest first step is:

Check OneDrive on the web before changing sync settings or running file-recovery tools.

First, search OneDrive.com

Microsoft recommends searching the OneDrive website first when files appear lost or missing, because this is where synced devices store their cloud copies. [R1]

Sign in to OneDrive.com and search for the missing item. Do not search only by the exact filename; Microsoft also recommends trying descriptions, dates, tags, or other details you remember. [R1]

If you use both a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account, check both. Missing files may simply be stored under another account. [R1]

Check the OneDrive recycle bin

If the file was deleted through sync, it may be in the OneDrive recycle bin even if it is no longer visible in File Explorer.

Open OneDrive on the web, select Recycle bin, find the item, and choose Restore. [R1]

For personal accounts, deleted items are normally retained for up to 30 days. For work or school OneDrive and SharePoint, the default can be up to 93 days unless the administrator changes it. [R3]

Deleting an online-only file from a device also deletes it from OneDrive on other devices and online, although it may still be recoverable from the OneDrive recycle bin. [R4]

The folder may have stopped syncing to this PC

A folder missing from File Explorer may still exist safely online.

OneDrive lets you choose which folders synchronize to a particular computer. Microsoft states that if you uncheck a synced folder, it is removed from that computer but remains available online. [R2]

Similarly, removing synchronization can make OneDrive files disappear from File Explorer while leaving them available in the cloud. [R5]

Could the files be online-only?

With Files On-Demand, OneDrive can keep file contents in the cloud without storing them locally.

A blue cloud icon means an item is online-only. It takes no local disk space and is downloaded when opened. An online-only file cannot be opened while the device is offline. [R5]

This is different from deletion.

What if files were overwritten rather than deleted?

If a file still exists but its contents changed during synchronization, check Version history.

OneDrive and SharePoint can display and restore older versions of stored files, including many non-Office file types. [R6]

What if many files changed or disappeared at once?

Eligible Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to roll the whole OneDrive back to an earlier point within the previous 30 days. [R7]

Microsoft says this can undo changes involving deleted, overwritten, corrupted, or malware-affected files. Be careful: files created after the selected restore point are moved to the OneDrive recycle bin during rollback. [R7]

What if the file is nowhere online?

Check the PC and any other device where the file may have existed.

Microsoft recommends searching local storage when a file may have been saved outside OneDrive or never finished syncing. Also check the local Recycle Bin. [R1]

If the file is absent from OneDrive search and the OneDrive recycle bin, Microsoft notes that it usually cannot be retrieved through normal OneDrive recovery. [R1]

At that point, local backup or deleted-file recovery may be appropriate if a local copy previously existed.

What should I do now?

  1. Search OneDrive.com.
  2. Confirm you are using the correct Microsoft account.
  3. Check the OneDrive recycle bin.
  4. Check whether the folder was excluded from local synchronization.
  5. Distinguish online-only files from genuinely deleted files.
  6. Use Version history if the file exists but its contents changed.
  7. For widespread recent changes, consider Restore your OneDrive if available.
  8. Search local devices and backups if the file never reached the cloud.

Do not start with disk recovery while an intact cloud or version-history copy may still exist.
